Head Pulleys

Head or drive pulleys are located at the discharge terminus of a conveyor. These pulleys offer the main driving force for a conveyor. These pulleys usually have diameters that are larger than the other pulleys which in turn help them to have enhanced traction and pulley life. These pulleys drive the conveyor belt and are usually mounted with external bearings.
An external driving source is used for driving this pulley.

Tail Pulleys

The return or tail pulley on the other hand is a type of conveyor pulley that is used to redirect the conveyor belt to drive the Pulley. The tail pulleys can make use of the internal bearings. They can also be mounted in the external bearings. Often they are located around the end of the conveyor bed. The tail pulleys generally serve as take-up pulleys on the shorter length conveyors.

Snub Pulleys

A snub pulley improves the traction of the drive pulley, by increasing its belt wrap angle. Drive pulleys, which can also be the head pulley, are driven by a motor and power transmission unit to propel the belt and material to the discharge. A bend pulley is used for changing the direction of the belt.

Screw conveyors are used to convey bulk material from almost any position (vertical, horizontal, or at an incline) and are one of the most reliable methods of conveyance. The screw conveyor is composed of a pipe with a welded steel strip that is formed into a continuous helix. The helix is referred to as flighting. The distance along the pipe from one point on the flighting to the next similar point is called the “pitch”. Couplings and shafts refer to the mechanisms by which two screw conveyors are joined. The screw conveyor may be housed in a “tube” or “trough.” The tube is a hollow cylinder, whereas the trough has a “U” shape profile, hence the term “U-trough” augers. Hangers are used to provide support and maintain the alignment of the screw conveyor.

Tube and U-trough screw conveyors are the two most common type conveyors of grain. Generally, U-trough screw conveyors operate at a slower speed than tube screw conveyors. Their screw diameters are usually larger, giving them greater capacity per revolution. Because of their lower speed, the U-trough screw conveyors are generally considered to cause less grain damage than tube screw conveyors. However, tube screw conveyors are less expensive and meet the needs of most grain handling situations.

Portable screw conveyors are used extensively for transferring grain into and out of storage.

What is Bucket Elevator?

Bucket elevators move bulk material vertically much like the conveyor belt. Buckets are attached to a rotating belt and fill with the material at the bottom of the elevator then move it to a designated point. When the bucket reaches this point, it discharges the contents, returns to the start point, and begins the process again. Buckets prevent spillage with their upright position design.

An appliance for elevating material, consisting of steel buckets fastened to an endless belt or chain. It is usually set at steep angles, around 70 degrees. The load is picked up by discharge from a chute or by a dredging action in a boot. Its best application is in a plant where space is restricted and the size of the material is less than 2 in (5.1 cm).
